INFECTION CONTROL IN THE HOME

Controlling the amount of infections that can occur in the home is most important in preventing further illness of people who have been diagnosed with medical conditions. PhilCare offers the following infection control procedures as a guideline for use in the home and may be used in conjunction with other instructions received from your doctor and/or home care professional.

Hand washing should always be done:

  • Before and after contact with the patient
  • Before handling dressings, tubes, medications or cleaning the equipment
  • After handling items soiled with blood or body fluids
  • Before eating
  • After handling or caring for pets
  • After using the toilet
  • After taking care of a person with a current infection
  • After removing gloves

Gloves ( vinyl or latex) should be worn:

  • Before contact with blood or other body fluids
  • Before touching an open wound
  • Before handling soiled linen or clothing

Remove gloves immediately after use and dispose of properly.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Electrical products should be grounded.  In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of shock by providing an escape wire for the electrical current.  Electrical products are equipped with a cord having a ground wire with the grounding plug.  This plug must be plugged into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded.
  2. PhilCare's products use a nominal 120 volt circuit and have a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated in sketch (A) shown below.  A temporary adapter, which looks like the adapter illustrated in sketches (B) and (C) below, may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown in sketch (C) if a properly grounded outlet is not available.  The temporary adapter should be used only until a properly grounded outlet illustratred in sketch (D) can be installed by a qualified electrician.  The green color rigid ear, lug and the like extending from the adapter must be connected to the permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover.  Whenever the adapter is used, it must be held in place by a screw.
  3. If it is necessary to use an extension cord, use only a 3-wire extension cord that has a 3-blade grounding plug, and a 3-slot receptacle that will accept the plug on the product. Replace or repair a damaged cord.
